A green tunnel at Delft Campus station with Mobilane Green Screens

The new underpass at Delft Campus station has been covered in greenery using Mobilane Green Screens. In total, sixty Hedera helix “Woerner” Green Screens of different heights were installed. The instant green hedges were planted by Lex van Wijk Hoveniers. The Municipality of Delft wanted to add plenty of greenery to the new tunnel, and Green Screens proved to be the perfect way to lend the underpass a natural and green look. They also contribute to the biodiversity and cooling of Delft Campus station and its surroundings. In addition, the hedges capture fine dust and prevent graffiti.

Easy and safe connection through the green tunnel at Delft Campus station

The new underpass, which serves as a bicycle and pedestrian tunnel underneath the rail tracks, was opened on June 21. The new cycle and footpath has been received positively by train passengers and students alike, as the tunnel greatly improves accessibility and helps people save time. The tunnel also serves as an easy and safe connection between the station area, Delft University of Technology, the Schieoevers area, and the residential Tanthof and Voorhof neighborhoods. Twenty 1.80-meter hedges, six 2-meter hedges, six 2.20-meter hedges, and twenty-eight 3-meter hedges were installed in the tunnel. The hedges have been placed in steel planters against the northern tunnel wall. Mobilane Green Screens cover the majority of the wall, transforming the tunnel into a stunning stretch of greenery. “The result looks great: the entrance to the station and through route have been greened up all in one go. This project marks a valuable contribution to a greener Delft Campus station environment”, Anja Schmal, Delft Campus station project manager at the Municipality of Delft, comments.

A green tunnel with instant green and sustainable hedges

The developers settled on Mobilane’s Green Screens to add greenery to the tunnel. Lex van Wijk of Lex van Wijk Hoveniers explains why: “The client preferred an instant solution. When exploring ready-made solutions, Mobilane’s ready-made Green Screens instantly stand out: they use strong plants, and they grow really well. The end result is stunning: the project instantly looks finished. We’ve already received so many positive reactions. You’ve got something to show for your efforts straightaway, and the client can instantly see the end result. The wall is covered in greenery straightaway, and you don’t have to tell them to be patient and see how the hedges grow, which is great!” The partners involved in the project also had nothing but praise for the installation process of the Green Screens. “We have been working with these hedges for quite some time, and one advantage is that they are easy and fast to install. The main advantage, though, is the instant end result”, Lex van Wijk adds. Lex van Wijk Hoveniers will also be handling the maintenance of the project, as well as the water supply.

Delft Campus station extension

The new bicycle and pedestrian tunnel is part of the renovation and extension of Delft Campus station. The renovation of Delft Campus is part of the Rijswijk-Rotterdam High-Frequency Rail Transport project, in which ProRail will be doubling capacity from two to four tracks. Delft Campus station is also set to become the first energy-neutral station in the Netherlands thanks to the solar panels on its roof.
