Green forecourt Martini Hospital – cycle shelter with sedumroof
- MobiRoof ECO
- Location: Groningen, the Netherlands
The transformation of the forecourt of the Martini hospital in Groningen in the Netherlands has been completed. The intervention was needed since over the years, a messy and unsafe traffic situation had arisen for the clients and visitors to reach the main entrance
Green cycle shelter
In the centre of the forecourt, an innovative cycle shelter with space for approximately 500 bikes has arisen. For the construction, it has been made use of galvanized steel with a total weight of over 20 tons. The so-called T-Hide cycle shelter is 2,40 meters high and equipped with LED lighting, charging points for e-bikes, and an integrated water drainage. Noticeable is the green roof spanning nearly 500 square meters in 3 rows above the cycle shelter. The roof is filled with the MobiRoof cassettes from Mobilane and the cassettes consist of a mix of six different full grown sedum plants. Gerben Hofsté from Klaver Fietsparkeren: “For the Martini Hospital, it was a must to realize a sustainable cycle shelter that fits with the environment. We have therefore equipped our T-Hide bicycle shed with the MobiRoof cassettes. As the final result, you have a beautiful view when you look down from within the hospital. In addition, the green roof offers a lot of benefits. It absorbs the rainwater which consequently leads to less peak drainage, it filters the air and it is attractive for bees, butterflies, and other insects.
Healthy view
Not only the green roof, the walking paths and borders were also constructed by gardener Bartelds from Onnen with hundreds of different kinds of plants that should give colour to the forecourt year round. The forecourt has also become a smoke-free zone. An important consideration in making the forecourt of the Martini hospital greener is the health effects on patients. International research has shown that patients with a view of living greenery recover significantly faster than patients with a grey and boring view.
