Green facades for the new head office of LC Packaging with BREEAM Outstanding certification

For the green facades of their new office, LC Packaging has chosen the WallPlanter system from Mobilane. The system is made up of specially developed planters into which fully-established hedge screens are planted. The WallPlanter is attached to the building’s outer layer, creating a natural planted covering.

Sustainable head office: BREEAM Outstanding-score

LC  Packaging is a family-owned company that is specialised in sustainable, flexible packaging solutions for dry bulk goods. The family-owned company that has been active for four generations has recently moved to a new location: a new, sustainable, state-of-the-art head office and warehouse with a BREEAM Outstanding-score. The production hall has been covered with a green facade. The green facade consists of 3 parts and contributes to the BREEAM Outstanding-score. The building has been designed by Quadrant4 architects where sustainability and wellness are at the forefront.

In total, 3032 solar panels have been installed on the roof. This is sufficient to provide 386 households energy for a whole year. The capture of rainwater also contributes to the certification. The captured rainwater is used by the greenhouses in the neighborhood for watering the gardening and farming activities.
The building offers a warehouse and head office function, but it is mainly designed as an inspiring meeting place where knowledge can be shared and everyone enjoys going to work.

​Green facades with ground-based Hedera

For the LC Packaging project, three WallPlanter facades are placed with a height of 12,5 metres and a width of 6 metres. The green facade starts from the ground and every 2,7 metre, a planter is attached against the outer layer. These planters are made of high-quality aluminium and are on both sides covered with an insulating layer with a drainage layer at the bottom.

This ground-based green facade is watered with an irrigation system with the right amount of water and plant feed. The water level is automatically measured with sensors. A drainage system ensures that excess water reaches the lower layer of Green Screens and provides water and plant feed to them. In addition, the drainage layer also ensures that the plant roots receive oxygen. This way, the Green Screens grow well and the green facade looks fantastic year after year.

The Hedera helix ‘Woerner’ Green Screens in the WallPlanter system are pregrown at the nursery and supplied fully grown. The plants are locally grown under the “On the way to Planet Proof” certification at Darthuizer Productie. This production location has a sheltered employmeny facility and provides space for 200 people with a distance to the labour market.

Effective collaboration and fast installation

The main contractor De Vries en Verburg has together with Lucas Lammers, CEO and fourth generation of LC Packaging chosen for the green facade system from Mobilane. The installation of the green facades has been realised by Mobicare in collaboration with Zoontjens Boomprojecten. The installation went well. The green facades were installed within 3 days.

LC Packaging has opted for the WallPlanter from Mobilane because, after a visit to Bemmel, they were convinced that Mobilane was the right party for LC Packaging. “We saw the same way of thinking and, especially, way of behaviour. LC Packaging is also positive about the collaboration itself: “The collaboration went well. The contractor, constructor and architect had something to say about the installation. And so did we! During these moments, Mobilane kept a cool head. Very good. We are very satisfied with the final result!
