For the realisation of a new construction project with 21 apartments with care facilities on the Weerdjesstraat, housing corporation Portaal has opted for an extensive green roof. The 380 square metre extensive green roof is equipped with 1,310 MobiRoof cassettes with direct sedum planting.
Extensive green roof
MobiRoof dealer Gé Leurs Hoveniers has installed the green roof. Gé Leurs: “The water buffer capacity of the new pre-cultivated Mobiroof cassettes is no less than twenty litres per square metre, much more than other extensive green roof solutions that are used. When fully saturated, the sedum cassettes provide a maximum roof load of no more than 58 kilos per square metre. We also assume that the energy costs for heating and cooling the building will be much lower due to the insulating effect of the cassettes thanks to the green roof.
The 1,310 sedum cassettes were installed very quickly thanks to the handy click system”. The outer edges of the extensive green roof are finished with gravel. The cassettes contain at least six types of sedum and also stimulate biodiversity in the city.
What is an extensive green roof?
An extensive green roof is a roof with self-sustaining vegetation that requires little maintenance. Extensive green roofs are lightweight roofs covered with relatively maintenance-friendly plant species, such as succulents (sedum). Sedum plants are suitable for extreme weather conditions on roofs, such as enormous heat or a lot of moisture from rain. Extensive green roofs are low in installation and maintenance costs and prolong the life of the roofing material.
