Mobilane introduces Green Screen Elaeagnus ebbingei

22 August 2022

Mobilane introduced a new type of hedge to its range  of Green Screens, the Elaeagnus ebbingei. This shrub is also known as Oleaster or Silverberry. A great strength of Elaeagnus ebbingei is that it’s wind and salt resistant. This makes the species ideal for coastal areas.

The hedge is evergreen and has large, oval leaves with beautiful shades of green and silver grey. This creates a modern look. In addition, it produces wonderfully fragrant flowers. Despite the fact that Elaeagnus is derived from the Greek word elaia, meaning olive, the oleaster does not produce olives, but a type of berry. Elaeagnus ebbingei is a strong shrub that, in addition to being resistant to wind and salt, can also cope well with air pollution and even traps fine dust.

Small, white flowers appear on the shrub. These have a strong fragrance that bees and bumblebees cannot resist. After flowering, red berries appear. They have a silvery glow, which is where the nickname “silver berry” comes from. These berries are edible, despite their somewhat sour taste. Birds also find them delicious. A Mobilane Green Screen Elaeagnus ebbingei not only provides food for birds and insects but also provide a safe resting and nesting place. In this way, this hedge contributes to biodiversity. If there are any berries left, they can be used to make a delicious jam, for example.

Greening of urban areas

Elaeagnus ebbingei is easy to prune and therefore the hedge is convenient to maintain. The hedge can be placed throughout the year with the exception of frost periods. It requires no special care or fertilizer and even in poor soil it can retain its leaves. The best location for Elaeagnus is sunny to semi-shade, which makes it suitable for most locations. The hedge captures fine dust and because of its resistance to strong air pollution, Elaeagnus is also used as a hedge plant along roads with heavy traffic. This way, the Mobilane Green Screen contributes to the greening of urban areas.
