From flower to berry: Mobilane Green Screen Pyracantha

1 June 2023

Every month we highlight a Green Screen from our range, this month we present one of our favourites: The Mobilane Green Screen Pyracantha coccinea ‘Dart’s Red’.

Firethorn hedge

Pyracantha coccinea ‘Dart’s Red’ is also known as the Firethorn. ‘Dart’s Red’ is a hardy plant that can tolerate a wide range of soil conditions, although it prefers well-drained soil. This hedge is also drought-tolerant and can thrive in full sun or semi-shade. The Firethorn can tolerate temperatures down to -20 degrees Celsius, making it a very hardy plant. It stays green all year round but changes throughout the seasons. As a result, there is always something different to see.

Pyracantha from flower to berry

The Pyracantha hedge is a vigorous hedge with small, white flowers in summer and vibrant, bright red berries in autumn and winter. The leaves of ‘Dart’s Red’ are a glossy dark green. This hedge thus brings quite a bit of colour to the landscape. The branches of the Pyracantha hedge have thorns. These sharp thorns, combined with the Green Screen’s fencing, provide a safe fence around the area. For this reason, Pyracantha coccinea ‘Dart’s Red’ is often used at stadiums.

“We have the Firethorn around our own business park. It is a beautiful, full-bodied Green Screen that requires little maintenance. Because it is beautifully green all year round and changes so much during the year, our site always looks attractive.” Alexander Ilsink, CEO Mobilane

A popular food source for birds and pollinators

The Pyracantha ready-made hedge contributes to biodiversity in several ways. The flowers are a food source for various pollinators such as bees, butterflies and other insects. In autumn, on the other hand, the berries are a popular dish for birds like blackbirds, house sparrows and tits. Pyracantha hedges provide nesting habitat and shelter for a wide range of birds and insects. The dense, thorny foliage provides shelter and protection from predators such as cats, allowing birds to nest in peace.
In summer, the flowers of Pyracantha hedges attract pollinators such as bees, butterflies and other insects. This can help support local biodiversity by providing food for these important species and supporting a healthy ecosystem. This makes Pyracantha ‘Dart’s Red’ a popular choice for animal-friendly wildlife gardens

Tip: Hang a bee hotel or nesting box to provide bees and birds with both a food source and nesting opportunities.
