ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

Sustainable, future-proof building and landscape design is growing in importance and value all across the globe. Planting and the green environment play a vital part in this. To maximize the impact of planting and soft landscaping, it is imperative that they are included in landscape and built environment designs from the earliest possible stage. So, why would you include green elements in your design, and how do you do so successfully? And what are the benefits of including planting in your designs? Below, Mobilane offers an outline of the options and important factors to consider, from the design process all the way through to installation and maintenance.

From the drawing board to installation and maintenance on site

Mobilane has its own team of technical experts. As specialists in green walls and roofs, they understand the critical elements within the process, including the location, the technical requirements for irrigation, the measurements and calculations, and plant selection. As such, they are your first point of contact for advice on the practical and logistical elements of installation and any ongoing maintenance. Whether you’re dealing with a complex design, or are in the early stages of working out how you could introduce a green roof, screen, or living wall into your plans — we’re with you every step of the way, ready to share our knowledge.

Sustainable and healthy construction

Mobilane’s indoor products, such as our LivePanel system, LivePictures, and LiveDivider, all contribute to a sustainable and healthy indoor environment. Plants should never be overlooked in new construction and renovation projects or in existing buildings, as they bring benefits to employees, homeowners, and visitors alike. Buildings that score highly on sustainability factors in their design, the materials used, and the healthy impact they have on the environment and people are eligible for BREEAM certification. Mobilane products contribute to the credits required to achieve BREAAM certification and help create an environment that is consistently healthy, green, and sustainable.

Embracing nature in building design

Sustainable design takes account of the surrounding natural landscape, its conservation priorities, and the potential for biodiversity. After all, that biodiversity in turn contributes to cleaner water, richer greenery, and a more stable climate. Nature-inclusive construction has a major impact in both urban and rural areas. Different options are available to suit different areas of application, different locations, and the space you have available. Green facades and green roofs are great examples of solutions that are easy to incorporate, install, and maintain. By designing and building to include green space, a landscape architect can achieve unity and balance between green and the gray infrastructure.

Urban heat island effect

Green building and nature-inclusive construction can serve as part of the solution to the ever-expanding ‘urban heat island’ effect prevalent across the built environment. An urban heat island is an inner-city area where the temperature is considerably higher temperature than in its surroundings. The primary causes for this are population density, traffic, industrial emissions, and a lack of green space and planting to offset these. The resulting temperature rise can be as much as 7 degrees. In order to effectively combat climate change, we need to explore ways to cool our urban areas down.
Designing with the urban climate in mind is imperative if we wish to future-proof our cities. The use of planting and landscaping in urban environments serves as one way to lower temperatures. Planting trees and shrubs, creating natural barriers, and adding in green roofs and green building surfaces are great ways to supplement the other natural design options available. Climate-adaptive design can help achieve the government’s ambitions to climate-proof British urban areas and render them more sustainable, leaving them better able to deal with the long-term impact of rising temperatures and water shortages.

‘‘AS AN ARCHITECT, HOW DO YOU ENSURE THAT YOUR GREEN-INCLUSIVE DESIGN ALSO ADDS VALUE IN TERMS OF LIVEABILITY, HEALTH, CLIMATE ADAPTABILITY, AND BIODIVERSITY?’’ -

Innovative and reliable systems

Green facades

Specifying green facades serves as just one simple and effective method for adding planted elements to your nature-inclusive building designs. A lush green living wall instantly adds value to any property. Green facades can be installed on both existing and new walls. Different types of plants can be used to realize the exact color, theme, and environmental impact you’re seeking. Whichever option you go for, the fact that the leaves absorb pollutants and particulate matter is guaranteed to encourage biodiversity and improve air quality.

Living Walls

Living walls, or green walls, are a creative and space-saving way to add greenery to the design of sustainable buildings. Architects, specifiers, and clients are increasingly appreciating the major impact, flexibility, and convenience green walls offer. Their popularity is partly due to the well-known positive effects of incorporating plants in living, working, and learning environments.

Liverpool waterfront apartments combine hard landscape with a softer, natural living wall option

‘‘Modern building designs often create clean, crisp lines and an urban streetscape of hard landscaping and walkways. Adding natural elements is sometimes seen as something of a challenge, as space, access, and amenity are all competing factors, leaving little leeway for extensive planting. ’’

Biophilic design principles

‘‘We wanted to see nature at the core of our renovated office design. And that meant using sustainable and eco-friendly materials throughout its construction. LivePanel ticks this box on many levels — it’s fully recyclable and bursting with plants, foliage, and color. Through its installation, the architect has succeeded in incorporating biophilic design principles into this renovation project — a perfect example of how to use nature in a living, working environment.”’’
