Apeldoorn opts for green construction site that fits city image

The Municipality of Apeldoorn transformed the city’s ageing market square into a vibrant and characterful meeting place in 2022. During the conversion, the city wanted to meet residents’ need to see more greenery on the square in advance. They did this in the form of installing sustainable green construction fences with living plants by Mobilane.

Market square becomes more modern and green

Apeldoorn’s market square is the heart of the city and was in need of renewal after 20 years of use. The aim was to create a place in keeping with the warm, green image of the Veluwe. People wanted more greenery and a city centre where people wanted to congregate. Preparations for this started in October 2021. The new ‘City Square’ now has more space for greenery, interactive fountains and a wooden market hall for the market and events. To give city residents a taste of more greenery, the municipality decided to install MobiGreenFence hoarding fences with living plants, interspersed with common construction fences.

A construction site that matches the city’s character

The municipality wanted to green up and at the same time tell more about the city. It was therefore decided to show history of the market square by means of a timeline with photos attached to the usual construction fences. Alternately, MobiGreenFence elements were incorporated for a green look. Residents were thus involved in the changes as early as the renovation. This way, the plans for greening the market square were also reflected in the construction site, and residents were very enthusiastic about this. As Apeldoorn Partners puts it: “We are the capital of National Park the Veluwe, and that goes hand in hand with greenery. Therefore, we also wanted the construction site to evoke that green atmosphere.”

Greening of construction sites

Living plants and flowers are essential for a climate-resilient and sustainable environment. A proven positive effect has also been measured on the health and social cohesion of people living in a green environment. Construction sites and event sites are a suitable place to add more greenery. MobiGreenFence is a green alternative to bare, traditional fences around construction sites and at events. The sustainable green hoarding fence consists of a planter with a mature ivy hedge along a galvanised frame. It is a simple and quick way to give a construction site, event or other temporary fence a friendly and natural look. Adding living greenery also reduces any graffiti nuisance.

Fine dust capture and sustainably produced

MobiGreenFence consists of a fence containing the plant species Hedera helix ‘Woerner’. This is a hardy and evergreen plant with a green colour and varying leaf shapes. The plant can take a lot when it comes to temperature changes or location. Research by the University of Staffordshire has shown that this evergreen ivy species captures around 40-60% particulate matter, improving air quality in the area. The hedges are grown in Mobilane’s own greenhouse and bear the label ‘On the way to planetproof’. In addition to sustainability, the company values corporate social responsibility. Mobilane therefore also provides workplaces for employees with a distance to the labour market. MobiGreenFence care consists of watering (once every 6-8 weeks in winter, once every 2 weeks in summer) and pruning.
