Near the entrance of the UMC Utrecht hospital, a new bicycle parking facility was built this year. The green roofs are fully covered with MobiRoof ECO sedum cassettes from Mobilane by Klaver Bicycle Parking. With this, the UMC contributes to a healthy life and a healthy society.

Applying a sedum roof to the new bicycle shed fitted perfectly with the hospital’s new objectives. A black roof can heat up to 70°C during hot summer days. A green roof keeps the temperature on the roof around 37°C. This ensures that the bicycles are always stored at an ideal temperature, which benefits tyre pressure. MobiRoof ECO is a ready-made green roof system with different species of Sedum. The cassette is made of recycled material and is fully recyclable. This reduces pressure on the environment and limits waste streams. The sedum is pre-cultivated locally with cuttings from our own nursery.

When the decision was made to build a new bicycle parking facility near the main entrance, this was one of the objectives. The location of the bicycle shed is perfect for a sedum roof. To reach the hospital entrance, most visitors walk across a footbridge towards the main entrance. From this walkway, the bicycle shed and thus the sedum roof can be clearly seen from above.
Hofsté says: “For the visitor experience, the green look of the bicycle shed is definitely positive. We have heard many positive noises from passing visitors. Views on a natural roof instead of steel roof panels are obviously much nicer.”
