Maintenance of the Ready-Made Hedge

1. First 4 weeks after planting
Rooting period. After planting, ensure the roots have the opportunity to grow out of the coconut container into the soil. Provide sufficient watering on a weekly basis, depending on weather conditions, ensuring both the coconut mat and the underlying soil layer are well hydrated. Fertilization is not required during this stage. However, this is especially important for beech and hornbeam hedges. The first 4 weeks are crucial, particularly when planting in winter.

2. Spring/Summer of the planting year
Start fertilizing once growth begins. Use a fertilizer with an NPK ratio of 2-1-2. When using a slow-release fertilizer, a single application of a 5–6 month product at 50 grams per meter of hedge is sufficient. Apply the fertilizer along the base of the plants. When using granular fertilizer, divide the same amount into five monthly doses of 10 grams per meter of hedge. Liquid fertilizers should preferably be applied weekly at a concentration of 2 grams per meter of hedge. Ensure adequate watering during dry periods.

3. Autumn of the planting year
In autumn, adjusted fertilization is recommended to properly harden the Hedera. Apply 10 grams of granular fertilizer per linear meter of hedge in August/September, with an NPK ratio of 1-1-3. Lightly water it in after application.

4. Winter
No fertilization or watering is required (except for container-grown systems or during dry conditions).

5. Spring/Summer of the second year after planting
Some growth of the hedge is still desired. Preferably use a slow-release fertilizer with an 8–9 month effect. Apply at a rate of 25 grams per meter of hedge along the base of the plants and lightly water it in. Ensure sufficient moisture during the growing season.

6. Autumn of the second year after planting
In autumn, adjusted fertilization is again recommended to properly harden the Hedera. Apply 10 grams of granular fertilizer per linear meter of hedge in August/September with an NPK ratio of 1-1-3. Lightly water it in after application.

7. From the third year after planting onwards
Growth control phase. From year 3 onwards, only minimal fertilization is applied, using an organic-based fertilizer at the end of winter. Parts of the hedge with lighter color or areas requiring additional growth may be selectively fertilized following the seasonal approach of year 2.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the difference between a hedge and a hedge screen?
A traditional hedge consists of individual plants that still need time to grow together. A Ready-Made Hedge is fully grown upon installation and is therefore also commonly referred to as a hedge screen.

2. When can a Ready-Made Hedge be installed?
Installation is possible throughout the year, except during frost or extreme heat conditions.

3. How much maintenance is required?
Maintenance is limited. In the initial period, watering is essential. After that, occasional pruning and general inspection are sufficient.
